What do you hope to accomplish after retirement? We would be surprised if your answer was to become a hip-hop artist. But that is exactly the goal that 72 year old Chicago resident Arthur Dubois had in mind. When he walked into Haven Studio, the owner didn’t know what to expect. After all, Haven Studio is a music mentoring program for young aspiring musicians. Yet Dubios promised he was young at heart and played some hip-hop music. The owner, Andre Daniels, was quickly floored by his talent. Arthur Dubois is beating the odds, as a 72 year old hip-hop artist.

Arthur Dubois never intended to become famous. He was just trying to take up a hobby to keep him occupied after he retired. NPR describes the sub-genre of hip-hop he plays, called trap music. Trap music only rose in popularity in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. Clearly well after Dubois’ youth. He is an entirely self taught hip-hop artist, which only adds to the amazement people feel when listening to him play.

Furthermore, he simultaneously learned to use the computer, social media platforms, and play amazing music all at once. While his intention was not fame, when you possess that much innate talent, the end result can be shocking. His new-found social media fame is a little overwhelming, he claims. But he feels honored because he didn’t know that many people liked him.

Haven Studio owner Andre Daniels helped Dubois set up an Instagram and Twitter account to let fans follow his music. Additionally, his YouTube channel keeps fans updated and entertained by his musical talent. However, throughout it all, Arthur Dubois doesn’t ever let it get to his head. Despite his thousands of social media followers and even more fans, his goal remains the same. He doesn’t care about getting famous or making money.

As he so clearly states, “I just want to put it out there and let other people hear my music. I don’t care about the Grammy’s or nothing like that. Just that people – they know where I’m at.”
