I am a caregiver in AZ. I have fingerprint(background check) CPR,First Aid and even though it it not required I have a business license from the town where I live. More and more professional caregivers are becoming independent due to the fact that the agencies are continually cutting our hourly pay. The agency I work with now has a hourly rate of $8.50 that is over $2.00 cut in pay in the past year due to the state cutting their funds. What reputable caregiver can work for this amount of money? The state of AZ does have a state certified class that can be obtained by taking a class from a independent facility…the state of AZ does not offer this class yet requires it if you work in a nursing home. With the continual growth of the elderly who is going to take care of them? You can go to work at Wal-mart for an example and after a year or so be making $15.00 per hour with no serious responsibilities like a good caregiver will have to take on. I welcome your input or suggestions. More and more of my friends who are excellent caregivers are seeking other employment, therefore what type of caregiver will you be left with when were are only getting $8.25 per hour? I would think pretty low on the employment base.
I agree with the problem. It is a race to the bottom. Our priorities with regard to our aging population seem very out of skew. I agree $8.50 an hour is not a living wage in most places in this country.
There are agencies like ours that pay a living wage. The benefit of working for an agency is both the protection that you are offered, the supervision and the back up. We offer a team approach to supporting our clients. Find an agency like ours.
I understand why so many of your friends are trying to do it privately or switching to other industries. But will it be worth going private when you are accused of theft by a “crazy” family member/beneficiary, when you can’t work because of getting injured on the job or want to retire without having the social security benefit. It sounds like a catch 22 where you are at. I do want to encourage you to find an agency that considers your needs as well as your clients.
Thank you for this video. My brother moved to AZ in order to help take care of and prepare for assisted living or some sort of home health care. I have referred him to this video in order to protect my family. Its a scary world out there of people that want nothing more than to take advantage of people. Thank you for the time spent in this video to better inform those that are starting or already in the process of home care in AZ.
